Planner Workspace

The planner is the core workspace where you create and refine surgical plans. It provides 2D and 3D visualisation of patient imaging alongside surgical planning tools.

Layout

The planner workspace is divided into four areas:

View Modes

Switch between view modes using the tabs in the toolbar or keyboard shortcuts:

MRI Modality Awareness

When MRI DICOM data is loaded, NavNX adapts the entire interface:
  • A blue MRI badge appears in the toolbar next to the case info
  • The Stack view overlay shows the active MRI series description (e.g. “csPD SAG LEFT KNEE”)
  • The status bar displays the modality and series alongside the slice count
  • Bone 3D view shows sequence quality indicators and synthetic CT confidence

You can switch view modes at any time without losing your work. Annotations, tunnels, and implant selections persist across all views.

The planner supports keyboard shortcuts for fast tool and view switching:

Tools

Keyboard shortcuts are disabled when typing in input fields. Press ? anywhere in NavNX to see all available shortcuts. A tooltip appears on your first visit pointing to the help icon.

Welcome Guide

On your first three visits to the planner, a welcome modal walks you through a 5-step workflow:
  1. Load DICOM files — drop files or auto-load from the cloud
  2. Choose a view — Stack, MPR, Bone 3D, or Segments
  3. Plan in Bone 3D — right-click to place tunnels, measure, and set anchor points
  4. Review and adjust — toggle tunnel visibility, view density profiles, undo changes
  5. Keyboard shortcuts — discover all available shortcuts
The guide dismisses after 3 visits or when you click “Get Started”.

Context-Aware Help

The Help section at the bottom of the properties panel provides tips that adapt to what you’re currently doing:
  • View-specific tips — each view mode shows relevant guidance (e.g. Bone view explains threshold adjustment, right-click context menu, and ROM setup)
  • Tool-specific tips — when a measurement or annotation tool is active, usage instructions appear
  • Contextual tips — situation-aware suggestions like “Load DICOM files to begin”, “Run segmentation to enable ROM”, or “Generate synthetic CT for MRI bone viewing”
  • MRI-specific tips — guidance on series switching, synthetic CT generation, and sequence quality when MRI data is loaded
Each tip can be individually dismissed by clicking the X button. Dismissed tips are remembered across sessions. Click Reset all tips to restore them.
The help panel shows a green count badge when tips are available for your current context. Expand it to see what’s relevant.

Undo / Redo

All discrete planning actions support undo and redo:
  • Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) — undo the last action
  • Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Cmd+Shift+Z) — redo
Undo/redo covers:
  • Adding, deleting, or moving tunnels
  • Adding or deleting measurements
  • Adding or removing implants
View settings (Bone Density Cutoff, Bone Transparency, View Style) are not included in the undo stack — they adjust continuously via sliders.

Auto-Save & Version History

The planner auto-saves your work as you make changes. The status bar displays the save state:
  • Plan saved — all changes have been saved
  • Saving… — a save is in progress
  • Save failed — an error occurred (check your connection)
Each save automatically creates a version snapshot. You can view and restore previous versions:
  1. Expand the Version History section at the bottom of the properties panel
  2. Each version shows a timestamp, version number, and a diff summary (e.g. “Added femoral tunnel, changed density cutoff”)
  3. Click the restore icon to revert to any previous version
Version history keeps the last 50 versions per case. Identical saves are deduplicated automatically.
Auto-save uploads your plan data to the cloud. If you close the browser and reopen the case, your plan will be exactly as you left it — including DICOM files, which are reloaded from cloud storage.
There is no manual save button — saving is handled entirely by the auto-save system with a 2-second debounce.
